Concentration 7

2 comments:

  1. Composition(20pts): 15 Hints at a foreground, middle, background
but is essentially flat, which is why I said what I did about it looking like digital art.

Contrast (20pts): 15 minimal contrast, but some.

Center of Interest(20 pts): 19 if you can keep the subject out of the center it will score better even though this is non objective.

Craftsmanship (20pts): 19- Very nice if you are intending minimalism. I get the feeling of a cartoon or animation. That is kind of interesting because you are using paper. Its definitely clean and the drop shadows created by the dark blue against the white are interesting. I wonder if you might look at the cut paper that utilizes shadow, you would get this effect as well.

Creativity (10pts): 5 I feel like you need more concept from now on. This and your first two are so simple (which is fine, it gives us (the viewer) something to build momentum from) but beware of being too simple as that wont score well.

    Classroom Ethics (10pts): 10-on time :) Excellent!

I am copying Jan Stark's Artist Statement that perhaps will spur some thoughts:

American artist Jen Stark was born in Miami, Florida in 1983 and received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005, majoring in fibers with a minor in animation. Her kaleidoscopic artwork brings to mind fractals, rainbows, geodes and topographic maps. Although Stark is most recognized for her paper sculptures,

*she has explored a variety of media including wood, drawing and animation. Her ideas are based on replication and infinity as well as hypnotic, optical designs that mimic mandalas and sacred objects.

she is a modern day magician who transforms humble materials like construction paper and glue into fantastic, intricate sculptures that mesmerize the eye. Her optically and methodologically baffling sculptures, animations and drawings gather inspiration from
*plants, outer space, microscopic designs in nature, color, math and science.

  2. Since you named her as your inspiration artist. Going from what you have to that kind of intricacy would be amazing. I know you are
"taking common things in nature and converting it into cut paper to bring pattern to the viewer's attention".

Maybe ask yourself" How can I use nature to explore pattern using cut paper. What exactly about nature? what exactly about pattern?
